Mgarr ix-Xini Route Seaside Rides

Gozo’s Hidden South Route

This scenic e-bike route takes you through the quiet heart of Gozo’s south. Starting in Xewkija Square, you’ll ride past countryside paths and descend into the hidden bay of Mġarr ix-Xini, perfect for a swim or short break. From there, climb up to the dramatic Ta’ Ċenċ Cliffs, offering panoramic sea views and peaceful open spaces. The ride ends in Sannat Square, next to the village church — a calm, local spot to relax and unwind.

Moderate route with a mix of hills, quiet roads, and optional walking sections near cliffs. ⚠️

Please walk your bike near cliff edges. The area is unfenced and unmarked.

Start: Xewkija Square

Begin your ride in Xewkija, one of Gozo’s oldest villages and home to the island’s iconic Rotunda church. The square is an easy landmark and launch point, with cafés nearby for a coffee or water before you begin.

From here, follow the Red Route, a marked path heading south through countryside trails.

🔴 Red Route – Countryside to the Coast

This adventurous trail takes you away from town and straight into Gozo’s hidden heart:

  • Rolling fields and quiet tarmac roads
  • Dips into sunken valleys
  • Forks leading to two optional destinations:
🔸 Mġarr ix-Xini (secluded swim stop)
🔺 Ta’ Ċenċ Cliffs (coastal viewpoint)

📍 Route Split – Ta’ Ċenċ or Mġarr ix-Xini
At this point, you’ll choose your path:

  • 🟠 Go left downhill for the Orange Route to Mġarr ix-Xini
  • 🔴 Stay on the red trail to head up toward Ta’ Ċenċ Cliffs first

🟠 Option A: Mġarr ix-Xini Bay – Hidden Gem Stop

📍 Orange Route to Mġarr ix-Xini
This narrow road winds down through a quiet valley. The descent is steep in places, so ride slowly and stay aware. The reward? A secluded, fjord-like bay surrounded by limestone cliffs and pristine water.

📍 Mġarr ix-Xini

  • A peaceful, car-free swimming cove
  • Great for snorkeling and cliff views
  • Seasonal café with refreshments and snacks

🌊 Tip: If you plan to swim, bring a towel and waterproof shoes. The beach is rocky but clear.

🏞️ Option B: Ta’ Ċenċ Cliffs – Gozo’s Grand Edge

📍 Ta’ Ċenċ Cliffs Viewpoint
If you continue along the Red Route or return from Mġarr ix-Xini, you’ll climb toward one of Gozo’s most dramatic and elevated coastal viewpoints.

  • Wide, grassy plateau at the cliff’s edge
  • Overlooks the blue expanse of the Mediterranean
  • Ideal for resting, walking, or photography

⚠️ Safety Note: The cliffs are completely unfenced and there are no signs or barriers. Walk your bike and keep far from the edge, especially on windy or gravel-covered paths.

End of Route: Sannat Square & Church

📍 Sannat Square
The trail ends in the tranquil village of Sannat, at the edge of a cozy central square beside the Church of St. Margaret. This is a great place to relax after your ride:

  • Benches shaded by trees
  • Local cafés and bakeries
  • Quiet side streets to explore on foot

Sannat offers a charming glimpse into everyday Gozitan life, far from tourist crowds.
