Ebike across Xwejni & Marsalforn Salt Pans
If you’re renting with us at Seaside Rides or you’re just e-bike curious, the Xwejni/Marsalforn salt pans are a perfect half-day ride on Gozo’s north coast, flat(ish), photogenic, and steeped in a 350-year-old tradition of hand-harvested sea salt.
A Seaside Rides E-Bike Guide
The checkerboard of rock-cut pans stretches for kilometers between Qbajjar and Xwejni Bay, and in summer you might even catch the families at work.
Why the Salt Pans are Special
- The salt-making method dates back to Phoenician/Roman times and is still maintained by local families today.
- Harvest season typically runs mid-May to early September, weather permitting, hot, dry weeks are key; rainy spells pause the process.
- Please do not walk inside the pans; it contaminates the harvest.
Where They Are (and What You’ll See)
The main stretch sits just west of Marsalforn, along the coast road past Qbajjar to Xwejni Bay (Żebbuġ locality). Expect honey-coloured limestone trays, sea pools, and if you’re lucky pyramids of drying salt and workers sweeping crystals with wide brooms.
Getting There (E-Bike, Bus, Foot, Car)
The Easy E-Bike Approach (Seaside Rides route ideas)
- From Marsalforn: Follow the coastal road toward Qbajjar then Xwejni; it’s a gentle roll with sea views the whole way.
- From Victoria (Rabat): Drop down to Marsalforn and continue along the coast; allow time for photo stops and wind exposure on the open shoreline. (Nice add-on: continue to Wied il-Għasri for a short cliff-top walk.)
Battery tip: The route is mostly undulating, ride in Eco/Tour and save Sport for short headwinds.
By Bus (if some of your group isn’t cycling)
- Mgarr (ferry) → Marsalforn: Route 322 runs from the ferry to Marsalforn; from there it’s an easy coastal walk/ride to the pans. Always check live times.
- Victoria (Rabat) → Xwejni stop: Route 310 serves Xwejni; from the bus stop it’s ~10 minutes on foot to the salt pans.
On Foot
Great coastal walks link Marsalforn ↔ Xwejni ↔ Wied il-Għasri; pick a short section or do a loop from Marsalforn.
Best Time to Go
- Golden hour (early morning/late afternoon) gives the most dramatic reflections in the pans and gentler temperatures.
- To see harvesting, aim for summer (roughly mid-May–early September) and look for activity near Xwejni’s caves/shops.
What to Do When You’re There
- Stroll the coastal path alongside the pans (stay off the trays).
- Buy local sea salt from a family shop at Xwejni when open, sometimes under the cliff caves by the roadside.
- Swim or snorkel at Xwejni Bay or Qbajjar; check wind/swell before entering.
- Extend your ride to Wied il-Għasri (short scenic walk down the steps) before looping back.
A (Very) Short History
The north-coast salt pans have been worked for centuries, with family concessions revived in the British period. Many of today’s pans are passed down across generations; you’ll see storage caves cut into the cliffs where the salt cures.
Respect & Etiquette
- No stepping inside the pans or mounds, one footprint can ruin a batch.
- Drones: check rules and avoid flying over workers/visitors.
- Cyclists: park bikes off the rock shelves (they’re fragile) and keep passages clear.
Seaside Rides Suggested Half-Day Itinerary (Loop)
Start: Marsalforn Promenade → Qbajjar → Xwejni Salt Pans (photos + salt shop) → Wied il-Għasri lookout (short walk) → back to Marsalforn for lunch.
Optional add-ons: extend west toward Wied il-Mielaħ or inland to Victoria for the Citadel views.
Practicalities
- Surface: Mostly paved/coastal roads with short rough sections if you detour on footpaths.
- Wind: The north coast is exposed, expect a headwind one way.
- Shops/food: Seasonal kiosks at Xwejni; plenty of cafés in Marsalforn.
- Facilities: No formal changing areas at the pans; bring water and sun protection.
When You Might See Harvesting
During settled summer weeks workers pump/sluice seawater into pans, let sun and wind evaporate, then sweep crystals into piles before moving them to the caves. It’s often weekly when weather cooperates.
